Things You Should Keep in Mind When Buying Tactical Pants
To begin with, let’s start with a short introduction into Tactical Pants & it’s Benefits so that you know exactly what you’re looking for when you are at the store picking out your first pair.
What are Tactical Pants?
Earlier known as ‘Cargo Pants’ during its inception, These types of pants had one initial feature which was to be used as an aid of storage for the wearer (Cargo). However with time the use and look of these pants began to evolve. With an initial set of two extra pockets, these pants now known as Tactical Pants have been reinforced with 6 to 8 Pockets, Material used to make these pants have immensely advanced and are now far more popular to not only the military but also to the common folk! Tactical Pants have come a long way from its ancestors back in 1938!
What do you gain from Tactical Pants?
Storage Capacity – We’re going to start with the Storage Capacity of your Tactical Pants as that is it’s most salient feature! What good would your Tac’ Pants be if you had just as many pockets as a regular pair of pants? Whether it be carrying around extra magazines for your firearm, or being able to store a knife, there are an endless number of storage options (Yes I am talking about pockets) to choose from! Thus giving you the ability to carry more during a mission or hunt and making the stored elements easily accessible when most required.
Secure & Tough – What good would your Tactical Pants be if they weren’t durable and secure! For the part of society that uses Tactical Pants the most like Policemen, Armed Forces & the Fire Department. These sections of service rely on these pants mainly for its durability! Reinforced stitching prevents the pants from tearing and also helps in carrying the heavy load within its pockets. These pants are made specifically to withstand harsh environments, burns, dirt & wear ‘n’ tear over time! In some situations if the wearer were to make expeditious movements, the pants and its reinforced stitching ensures that the pants stay intact and flexible.
Variations – There are an umpteen number of Tactical Pants to choose from based on a number of different characteristics. Color, Material, Weight, Pockets, Type Etc. solely depend on their purpose and requirements. Tactical Pants are available to suit both genders and come in a variant of different price ranges based on the type. Ripstop & Twill weave are the two most used weaving styles for tactical pants and are the most reliable considering the harsh conditions these pants are going to be put through.
The Variants of Tactical Pants
Tactical Jeans – These Tactical Pants are designed the same way as jeans are and used mainly to conceal weapons securely and keep a very low profile. Tactical Jeans come with its main use of carrying a concealed weapon. Whether you are heading out on a covert mission and need to fit in or just hanging around at home, these Tactical Jeans are made to suit your everyday low-profile use.
Covert Tactical Pants – These are mainly worn by those looking to stay undercover and not pass off as someone who is carrying a weapon or on a mission. Covert Tac’ Pants are mainly used by law enforcements or federal agents who during a stake-out or a mission have all the essential facilities of Tactical Pants but in a ‘Low-Key’ fashionable way. These can pass off your regular off the mill chinos but are made with the same durability and sturdiness of high end Tactical Pants.
EMT Pants – EMT (Emergency Medical Technicians) Pants were made for those who work in the medical emergency service. These pants were required to be resistant to many types of environments and were to be able to allow the EMT to carry supplies or equipment with them in their pants. Thus coming into existence to give our medical technicians the support they need while they perform their heroic duties.
Overt Tactical Pants – Overt Tactical Pants are very similar to Military Tactical Pants and have the same design that was worn by the British Military back in the 1980’s. These Tactical Pants are designed to be durable, comfortable, with ample storage space and to ensure that you can move about quickly and easily. Great to wear for your military operations, a trek or just out hunting with the boys!
Things to Look out for when buying Tactical Pants!
Cargo pockets, Knife pockets, Ammunition pockets, Knee-Pad pockets etc you are given an endless set of options and it completely rests on exactly what you would require the Tactical Pants for! We cannot stress enough on how important it is for the Tactical Pants to have enough pockets. But of course you must also bear in mind that more pockets does not necessarily mean better. Pick and choose the type of Tactical Pants you wear correctly to ensure you can manage it when it is full with supplies you are carrying around. It may weigh you down more than you expect it to or even be difficult to move if you are not used to it. Along with the different types of pockets available, you have different modes of closing these pockets. Buttons, Velcro and Zips are of the primary choice for Pocket Closures. Pick and choose which makes it easy for you to reach and grab what you need!
Now that you’ve found the right type of Tactical Pants along with how many pockets you’d need, It is imperative that you get the fit absolutely right. Ill fitting Tactical Pants could cause an issue (Even a life threatening one) when you are out in the field. You must pay great attention to the size and fit of the pants. They should be well placed slightly above your waist ensuring it holds the weight of all the extra supplies being stored in its pockets. It most definitely should not drag under your feet! Size & Fit is key to great performance while wearing your new Tactical Pants.
Let’s leave the most important element for the last. The material you select can go a long long way during your mission or trek! You can choose from more breathable material to help when you are out in desert areas or a thicker more insulated material to keep you snug in harsher colder climates. The material should be able to stretch and pull along with your movements so that it does not hold you back while your fellow soldier moves along. Neoprene allows the Tactical Pants to stretch well without affecting the fabric and allows you to have greater mobility.
Along with the above, It is an absolute must for your Tactical Pants to undergo DuPont Teflon Treatment. This allows the pants to be waterproof! Depending on how much you are willing to spend on your Tactical Pants, you can go for a more pocket friendly material in which the waterproofing tends to die out with time. But if you are willing to shed out the ‘big bucks’ you can select the options in which the waterproofing treatment is embedded in the material and lasts much longer!
All in All the above mentioned pointers should help you through your first purchase and give you a sense of how you need to be super picky when you are at the store picking out your first pair of Tactical Pants!
